Clinical Program
- The program must provide sufficient clinical experiences for the students to be proficient in the comprehensive treatment of a wide range of complex prosthodontic patients with various categories of need.
- The program must provide sufficient clinical experiences for the student to
be proficient in:
- Collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting diagnostic data
- Determining a diagnosis and prognosis
- Developing a comprehensive treatment plan
- Evaluating critically the results of treatment
- Effectively utilizing the professional services of allied dental personnel, including but not limited to dental technicians, dental assistants, and dental hygienists
- The program must provide sufficient clinical experiences for the student to
be proficient in each of the following. The program must also provide sufficient
experiences for the student to be competent I laboratory phases for the
following:
- Use of adjustable articulators to develop an integrated occlusion for opposing arches
- Restoration of endodontically treated teeth
- Fixed prosthodontics, which should include:
- Complete arch restorations
- Partial arch restoration
- Removable partial dentures, which should include:
- Tooth supported prostheses
- Tooth and mucosa supported prostheses
- Transitional prostheses
- Complete dentures, which should include:
- Patients with varying anatomic characteristics and management problems
- A variety of tooth forms and occlusal schemes
- Relines and rebases
- Overdentures
- Immediate dentures / transitional dentures
- Implant suppoeted and/or retained prostheses, which should include:
- Complete arch restorations
- Partial arch restorations
- Single tooth restorations
- Continual care and maintenance of restorations
- Students must be competent in the prosthodontic treatment of geriatric patients which should include patients with varying degrees of cognitive and physical impairments.
- Students must be competent in the prosthodontic treatment of patient with temperomandibular disorders and/or oral facial pain.
- Students must be exposed to patients requiring various maxillofacial prosthetic services.
- Students must be exposed to preprosthetic procedures which should include:
- Contouring of residual ridges
- Gingival recontouring
- Placement of dental implants
- Removal of teeth
These guidelines will help one understand how the program curriculum is developed. Our main objective is to give the resident the opportunity to be exposed to the designated prosthodontic principles. There may be several of these principles that one may not fully subscribe to, but it’s important that the resident be able to incorporate these principles into his/her personal development.
