Clinical and Laboratory Requirements

Columbia University CDM Graduate Prosthodontics has established clinical and laboratory requirements to insure that each resident reaches a competent prosthodontic level of skill. He/ she will handle a diverse number of cases initially ranging from the relatively less complex progressing to more extensive rehabilitations. Each resident will appreciate the importance of “case control” through effective data collection, diagnosis and treatment planning. He/she will develop skills in appointment work scheduling. He/she will use techniques that communicate and verify treatment goals.

The goals of these requirements are based on ACP guidelines, as well as being involved in the process of Board Certification. Cases are distributed according to each resident’s level of competence, as well as program needs. The first year requirements will compete with the basic sciences, which effects clinic time.

The progress of each resident will be monitored under close supervision of the faculty. Concerns will be identified and addressed. Standard of Care Forms must be used to insure and verity completion of these requirements. Each resident understands that clinical and laboratory requirements must be met to complete the program.

The clinical and laboratory philosophy of each resident should keep in mind:

  • That a higher standard of care exists with the prosthodontist.
  • That preparation, promptness and organization is the key to prosthodontic success. The many hours spent in the laboratory are crucial.
  • That being knowledgeable in laboratory procedures is essential in pursuing excellence in prosthodontics.

The following are specific requirements listed by the year. Requirements are accumulative (i.e. a resident can complete or start a third year requirement during his/her first year.) The resident should keep a record of his/her requirements.
